Festival Waste was a project that asked us to think outside the box to research the endemic of the rising waste left behind from outdoor festivals and design new systems, to minimise waste and/or to design out waste. Re-design one of four commonly abandoned camping items to enable materials reclamation, reuse, and combat the mountains of festival waste destined for landfills. I chose to focus my work on the issue of lack of knowledge around common camping product materials and how to correctly recycle them.

Design Concept
This project will utilise visual elements to communicate the elements and effects that popular festival equipment have on festivals and the environments. The project will utilise a series of visual ‘nodes’ (icons) that represent popular equipment and its main materials. These nodes are designed to be universally recognised and will be versatile so they can be used in any situation.
The aim of this project is to present a prototype of these nodes and showcase their versatility in both digital and traditional media. By presenting the nodes and their communication effectiveness at 3 critical stages of communication for festivals and their users.

1. Before the festival on their websites / social media
-this will be to help users identify what is the best and Eco friendliest products to bring.
-help users identify key materials and understand the long-term impacts of their equipment.

2. During the festival
-physical posters and pamphlets implemented in key ‘hotspot’ zones that see a lot of traffic so that people will have a constant reminder. (i.e bathrooms, medical tents etc.)

3. After the festival, both digital and physical
-the festivals can provide information booklets and weblinks for a guide on how to recycle their products both if possible at the festival site and after returning home.
